About LAHI (Local Arts and History Initiative)

Concept:

The concept of LAHI centers on the belief that local people are well qualified to identify the heritage of their local area and determine what is of value to them. Professionals can advise on what is of historic and cultural importance and assist in sourcing information and providing technical advice, but local communities are in a position to make decisions about what is of local significance and how it should be safeguarded for the future. LAHI aims to take a holistic view to encourage a convergence of nature and culture, people and place, and of the past and future.

Objectives:

  • Build an online archive of the Filipino local heritage
  • Provide a multimedia resource
  • Reach a diverse audience
  • Increase awareness of Filipino local arts and history

Key Areas:

  • Local distinctiveness – to ensure that cultural richness and distinctiveness are conserved for current and future generations
  • Diversity – improve opportunities for people of all backgrounds to develop and carry out their own projects to record and care for their local heritage
  • Understanding – create wider understanding of local history and the contribution it makes
    to shaping society
  • Access - to extend access through imparting knowledge, records and care of local heritage

Components:

  • Website –As well as providing information on starting and running a LAHI project, the LAHI website—hosted as a section of Filnet—should contain a database directory of all projects, together with outputs such as photographs, videos, oral history recordings, research reports and leaflets
  • Advice program – staff should help local groups investigate, explain and care for local landmarks, landscapes, traditions and culture through seminars and workshops as well as through the production of instructional modules
  • Educational supplement – the website should either host a teacher’s page or link to e-turo re: resources for teachers to assist the teaching of community development and local historiography.
