Culture Filipinos belong to over a hundred ethnic group, each with its own distinct language and culture, its own customs, beliefs and traditions, its own legends, epics and myths. Yet, a lot of that culture is slowly being forgotten. Fewer and fewer of us are interested in the old ways anymore, and the old stories and traditions are not being handed down to the next generation. How many of us listened to myths and folk tales as children? What stories inspired us or scared us? Who were the gods and monsters of our people? Who were our folk heroes? What did our people believe and practice? We need to answer these questions because we need to look back to our past in order to be able to envision our future. Some of our folklore, traditions and cultural practices have already been documented, but much has been forgotten. A large part of our culture has never made it into the records. Those stories and practices remain to be told and passed down-- stories and practices that will serve as the threads that weave the fabric of our identity as a nation. Tell your stories and show what you remember, here on LAHI. |
